The San Diego County Railway Museum Association will meet January 13, 1963, 7:30 p.m., in the Balboa Park Organ Pavilion Office. All members, prospective members and interested persons are cordially invited.

A color slide and narration program featuring the railroads of the Sierras and the Southern Pacific narrow gauge as it was and as it is will be presented by Al Diamond, Association president.

Business will include final consideration of the proposed amendments, review of applications for membership, discussion of plans for the March 3 LAMTA rail excursion, and other items. President Diamond says most of the meeting time will be given to the program. He also reminds everyone that there is a parking lot in the rear of the Pavilion.

HEAR ABOUT LIFE ON THE SD&AE

SDCRMA has now arranged to invite two former SD&AE employees to the April meeting. Members and friends will hear about life on the SD&AE back in the days of steam. The meeting will be informal and questions will be invited. If members are interested, former San Diego Electric Railway Company personnel will be invited to a later meeting. One of our prospective guests worked on the beach interurban lines.

HERE'S A PROGRESS REPORT ON 316

Charles Gerdes, SDCRMA treasurer, has made excellent headway toward the reconstruction of SDERy 316. 316 was one of 35 single-truck Birneys which operated on Routes 1, 2, 3 and 5, on the Mission Beach shuttle, and on tripper service.

Most of the cars were later sold to other systems through a broker. Included were eight cars sold to Sacramento, at least three to Bakersfield, and others to Halifax, Nova Scotia. There is also a possibility that one-time SDERy Birneys may also have operated in Fort Collins, Colorado, and in El Paso and later Vera Cruz.

Of the cars that remained there were two, numbers 316 and 318. 316 was used as a locker room in the lot between the repair and paint shops. Later the car was sold for use as a cabin on a site alongside U.S. 80,west of Alpine. Gerdes purchased the car body, completely disassembled it, and catalogued the parts.

Painstaking care has been taken in the creation of numerous drawings of car parts. In addition the countryside has been scoured and additional parts have been obtained from other car bodies in California and Washington. Gerdes now has working drawings for a four wheel truck which had its own unique pattern. (Doug Duncan)

AND MORE ABOUT THE JANUARY MEETING
